The University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions has named Ally Bailey of Springdale Public Schools as the 2022-23 Mentor of the Year.
Bailey, a Central Junior High School career and technical education teacher, was surprised with the award April 25 at a surprise ceremony at the school.
The educator was nominated for the award by her intern, Madison Phinney.
Bailey said she was humbled to receive the award, noting having a great mentee was a factor in her success.
"She teaches me just as much as I teach her," Bailey said of Phinney. "I think it's important to bring in these new, fresh minds."
The recognition is open to all mentors currently supporting University of Arkansas students, said J.L. Jennings, University of Arkansas field placement director.
Phinney said she’s had the first-hand privilege of experiencing Bailey’s dedication to supporting her students' learning and development.
“Throughout my internship, Ms. Bailey has provided me with a supportive and inclusive learning environment, where I have been able to learn and grow as a future educator,” Phinney said.
Bailey has gone above and beyond to provide the intern with opportunities to observe and participate in her classes, she said.
“She has taken the time to explain the rationale behind her teaching methods and has encouraged me to ask questions and offer feedback,” Phinney said. “Ms. Bailey has taken an interest in my personal and professional development, regularly checking in with me to see how I am progressing and offering support and encouragement.”
The College of Education and Health Professions appreciates outstanding mentor teachers like Bailey, Jennings said.
“Her dedication and commitment to her students, our interns and our community is invaluable,” he said.
Bailey received a banner to display in her room for the award, Jennings said.
She will likewise be featured May 2 on Good Day NWA, he said. The morning show airs from 7-9 a.m. Monday through Friday on KNWA and FOX24.
